Cute, cuddly Havanese puppies are not as easy to fine as puppies of many other breeds. It is Cuba’s only native dog breed and more correctly known as the Bichon Havanese. Over the years it has been known as the Spanish Silk Poodle and Havana Silk Dog because of its silky coat.
The earliest evidence of dogs being taken to Cuba is found in the beginning of the 16th century. Ship’s logs mention dogs being taken to the island. Cuba became a favourite destination for the aristocracy of Europe. The little dogs attracted the attention of the court ladies of Europe and so the breed found its way back to France, Spain and England.

Havanese puppies grow into affectionate and gentle companions. they are very brave for their size. The coat is soft and light and can reach a length of 6 or 8 inches. The plumed tail curls loosely over the rump.
It is regarded as hypo-allergenic and will suit those with allergies. they do not shed a lot but should be brushed thoroughly so that the dander and dead hair is removed. Sometimes the dogs are clipped to make maintenance easier. Height ranges from 8 to 11 inches. The dogs have good longevity and may live for 14 years or so.
It is a healthy little dog. Some have luxating patellas and some are susceptible to eye and skin disorders. To cash in on the growing popularity of this breed, there are some unscrupulous breeders selling puppies from dogs that may have genetic problems or suspect temperaments.
